1884-CC Half Eagle, PCGS AU55
The 1884-CC Liberty Half Eagle was the last of the 5 issues from the Carson City Mint in the 1880s. All of these issues are tougher to find than those from the 1890s. There are of course a reduced number that can meet expectations of CAC. Only 1 in 61 and 23 in 58 have been approved by CAC (no other MS), while only 15 have been approved in 55. This example has lovely light golden surfaces which are characteristic of CC many of the half eagles from this time period and indicating less copper in the gold alloy from which their planchets were made. Strong luster under the light and a bit of grunge around the devices testifies to the orginality of this example. This example was a Fairmont coin auctioned in 2021 by Stacks-Bowers for $9000 and before the run-up in gold prices when PCGS retail guide priced it at $7250. We price it right at PCGS and CAC guide levels at present.
This coin is approved by CAC.
