Welcome to our new site for numismatics

Updated: Jul 16, 2024

Hi Folks. As of July, 2024 we are offering great numismatic coins in our boutique online coin shop. We also attend some of the major shows, so if you see the Desert Moon Numismatics table at events like CSNS, Summer ANA, and Winter FUN, please stop by our table to say hi, talk coins, and view the Desert Moon offerings in hand. And of course, if you have a great coin to sell, please offer it to us. I am the owner of this boutique coin shop, and I have been collecting for 20 years. Every time I changed collecting directions, I would have coins to sell. Until now, I mostly would be what is called a vest-pocket dealer at the shows, walking the floor and selling to the dealers I had built up relationships with over the years. I would also be looking for great coins to buy in my areas of collecting. Now I am changing directions again and becoming more on the dealer side, hence this website and tables at events.

Why CAC/CACG?

What I have learned over these 2 decades is that there are coins, and then there are great coins. The great coins are those that have everything going for them - no detractions from eye appeal in the grade they are today, whether that be G04, XF45, AU55, or MS64, and on. I also prefer coins with minimum manipulation by humans or with other problems (i.e. heavy cleaning, tooling, heavy dipping, spot removal, PVC, puttied gold........). This can be very tricky to determine for many coins and it is good have have expert opinions by those with decades of viewing thousands and thousands and more thousands of coins. Within this in mind, I have sent in several hundred coins to CAC over the past decade and this helped me learn about the surfaces of coins. CAC and its sibling grading company, CACG, are very concerned about surface quality and will not sticker, or slab with a grade, a coin they believe to have had such manipulations or problems. CAC/CACG also only stickers and slabs with a grade what they believe to be 'A' or 'B' coins for a given grade. In reality, this is probably between the upper 20 to maybe 40% of the US coins that are gradeable. This issue of CAC/CACG and their relevance continues to be briskly debated in the numismatic community but suffice to say that the best coins mostly come with a CAC sticker if slabbed by another TPG, or are migrating into CACG slabs. So it is not surprising that these coins have premiums relative to those that do not have a CAC sticker or in a CACG slab and are generally the nicest coins out there, at least for the US coins that this TPG handles (most US coins). For these reasons, you will see that most of our inventory (not all) either are CACed or in CACG holders. Keep in mind great coins are available that CAC have not stickered or CACG has not graded. There are many examples of great non-CAC/CACG US coins, and we will also offer these when we have them available and if they meet our own high expectations of quality. In either case, please take a look at our offerings and come back when you can to view Desert Moon Numismatics new offerings, read the new blog posts, and thank you for your interest.

And most importantly, all of our offerings that are purchased from this website are backed by a no questions asked 7-day return upon receipt by the buyer. This means we fully back what we sell. Also, we only sell what we would want to have in our own collections.

Thanks, Desert Moon Numismatics

Here is the type of coin we will be offering, ooh, ah!
